Indie / Personal Sites

Dig Deeper : Was my introduction to the world of indie sites. He acted as perhaps the biggest inspiration for this site, maybe this site wouldn’t have existed without me stumbling upon his website. Some of his articles really are an eyeopener some of which I thought were interesting were:

And more. I haven’t completely read his site as of yet, I plan to slowly read them one by one.

Drummyfish : It is the website of a guy named Miloslav Číž, and oh boy, I really don’t have the proper words to describe him, if you wanna know about him check out his own Wiki called the LRS Wiki, which unfortunately now only accessible to a select few individuals who do know how to access it. I wouldn’t be putting the exact steps to access the wiki, but do know that the steps are on the website.

He has some really strong and controversial views, I don’t agree with everything on this Wiki. But it is really, really, interesting so it’s linked my website. I have personally spent hours reading through his Wiki. If you are able to get your hands on this Wiki I encourage you to read it, it’s really a fun experience.

Gwern : This guy loves to write long detailed essays on various topics like technology, psychology, to obscure experiments. Although I don’t really go to his site all that much, whenever I do, I end up spending a lot more time than originally anticipated.

His site follows a similar psychology to mine, in the sense the website progressively gets better with time, but in a different way; he likes to revisit old articles and add or rewrite parts of it as his knowledge expands. I on the other hand find it much easier to start from scratch, as I hate having to rewrite old parts.

Knowledge / Wikis / Deep Resources

Shadow Wiki : This Wiki served as a useful guide for my own website, I was very surprised by how did he even manage to classify so many browsers, email providers, xmpp clients, etc. I highly encourage you to check it out for once. I have had issues in the past with this site not opening so now I have cloned the entire website on my device.

Eldritchdata : Requires JavaScript to be disabled. Has genuinely useful guides and lists. I’ve mostly used it to discover new things to watch or explore. The resources are also really useful if you’re interested in them.

Philosophy / Alternative Thinking

Low-Tech Magazine : This is the solar powered version of the site, yes it is completely ran using the rays of the sun. This already makes a big statement regarding “modern” websites. Although sometimes it goes offline due to bad weather.

It talks about technology but not in the way usual way you will expect a tech magazine to; instead it like to explore old tech solutions to modern life, so it has articles like:

I haven’t put any of his articles no low tech solutions to practical use as of yet but, I still like to read them due to how interesting they are.

Search / Discovery

Wiby : A search engine that only indexes small indie sites. In my experience it has been quite useful to find real articles, websites made by real people. Has a cool little surprise me feature which takes you to a cool random website, I’ve had quite some fun with this feature. If you do have a small, indie website, I highly encourage you to go and get your site indexed there, yes you do have to submit a request for your site to get indexed. Also you can index others sites as well so if you don’t find something there, you can add the relevant pages from other sites contributing to the search engine. Make use of Wiby when:

  • You want to explore for fun
  • You don’t care what you find
  • You want that “old web” feeling

Marginalia : Feels similar to Wiby but has a few differences. It has its own crawler and index. I haven’t used it as much as Wiby but has more features compared to it. Make use of Marginalia when:

  • You want something useful but not SEO garbage
  • You’re researching or reading
  • You want better weird, not random weird

Tools / Platforms

tilde.club : It’s basically a shared Linux server running Fedora 43 currently, but that’s irrelevant as you just need a Unix shell, you can apply for a share of this server and you will get a home directory, a terminal via SSH, and you can also host your own website using the public web directory which is visible at username.tilde.club. Great if you need a Linux terminal on you at anytime or if you want to experiment.

Bear Blog : Use this if you want to quickly set up a blogging system it only takes a few minutes. It’s quite minimal by design. The example site’s homepage is only about 6.5KB in size.

Weird / Fun / Internet Oddities

The Useless Web : Does exactly as the name says, takes you to a random website that is absolutely useless. Some of the websites I’ve encountered are:

Minimal Web / Performance

512KB Club : A list of sites under 512KB, its much more about mindset, rather than the number. I actually applied for this club today I got a score of 229.89KB, realizing that 200+KB of that was just the font I decided to remove it, after which I got a score of 6.53KB, I decided to push things even further by minifying the HTML, CSS, images, and even the SVG file after which I got to an absurdly low 5.13KB, I’m quite happy :) Let’s see if I get selected.

I got selected!!!
